What Did the High Priest Carry on His Shoulders?

27 Feb 2026

Tetzaveh "You Shall Command"

TORAH: Exodus 27:20-30:10 | PROPHETS: 1 Samuel 15:2-34 | GOSPEL: Mark 6:14-29

Let’s find out in this week’s Torah portion called Tetzaveh, which means:

“you shall command.”

This portion begins by describing the garments of the High Priest. On Aaron’s shoulders were two onyx stones engraved with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel — six on each stone.

The High Priest literally carried Israel on his shoulders before the Lord. Over his heart was the Breastplate of Judgment — twelve stones, one for each of the Tribes of Israel. Israel was carried in two places: on his shoulders — representing authority — and on his heart — representing covenant love.

Yet Aaron and his successors were sinners. Under the old covenant, written on stone, he represented a people who stood under judgment, condemned by the law.

Now let’s look at Yeshua, the great High Priest. Isaiah 9:6 tells us that “the government will be upon His shoulders.” Verse 7 goes on to speak of the increase of that government — there will be no end. Could this increase include the inclusion of the nations?

Revelation 5:8–10 says:

“And when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders (could they be representing the twelve tribes and the twelve apostles?) fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying, ‘Worthy are You to take the scroll and to open its seals, for You were slain, and by Your blood You ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and You have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.’”

Listen to how this connects to Isaiah 59:16–17:

“He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no one to intercede; then His own arm brought Him salvation, and His righteousness upheld Him… He put on righteousness as a breastplate.”

Hebrews 7:25–26 confirms this High Priestly role:

“He always lives to make intercession for them. For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a High Priest, holy…”

On the turban of the High Priest’s head was engraved:

“Holy to the Lord.”

As nations, we are brought into a holy, priestly calling — not to replace Israel, but to intercede, to stand in the gap on behalf of Israel — filling the heavenly bowls with incense as we bring the Lord in remembrance of His covenant promise to restore Israel.

Isaiah 49:22 calls the nations to carry Israel close — "in our arms and on our shoulders."

Near the end of this Torah portion, the Lord says:

“I will dwell among the people of Israel.”

This is what we are preparing for as we come alongside God’s people — that together we are making our hearts ready as His bride for our Bridegroom’s return.
