Why Did God Choose Israel?

Va'etchanan "And I pleaded" & Ekev "As a result"
TORAH: Deut. 3:23-11:25
The answer is much simpler than you may think. . . . . Because He loved them.
In this week's Torah portion, Moses reminds Israel that they were not chosen because they were the
largest nation...the strongest...the most deserving.
They were chosen because God loved them.
"The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people... but because the LORD loves you..." — Deuteronomy 7:7–8
A Covenant of Love
It was out of this love that God made covenant with Israel—a binding promise that He would never reject them or do away with them.
That covenant still holds true today.
It was also out of this love that God called for their response, commanding them to love the LORD their God with all their heart, with all their soul, and with all their might.
Love was both the foundation of the covenant and the response God desired.
Standing in the Gap
There were times when God's anger burned against Israel and He spoke of destroying them.
Yet Moses continually stood in the gap.
How did he intercede?
By reminding God (putting the Lord in rememberance) of His covenant and of His love for His people.
Not because God had forgotten...
But because God had invited Moses to appeal to His covenant promises.
That same invitation remains for us today.
"On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen, all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance take no rest." Isaiah 62:6
We too are called to stand in the gap and intercede for Israel, reminding God of the covenant He made and the love He has for His people.
His Love Still Remains
If you, as His child, cannot be separated from the love of God...
Then I would suggest neither can His firstborn be separated from His love.
God's covenant has not changed.
His love has not failed.
And His promises still stand with His children.
