Ki Tezei "When You Go Out"
TORAH: Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19
This week’s Torah portion is Ki Tetzei, which means “When you go out.” The portion begins with Israel going out to battle against their enemies, and later God gives them an important command about how they were to conduct themselves while encamped for war.
“When the army goes out against your enemies, then keep yourself from every wicked thing.”— Deuteronomy 23:9
Why was this so important?
God gives the reason just a few verses later:
“For the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and give your enemies over to you; therefore your camp shall be holy, that He may see no unclean thing among you, and turn away from you.”— Deuteronomy 23:14
Holiness in the Middle of the Battle
Israel was preparing to face a physical enemy, but God reminded them that the condition of their own camp mattered.
Why?
Because God Himself was walking in their midst.
Their victory was not simply going to come through their strength, strategy, or ability to fight. God was present with them to deliver them and give their enemies into their hands.
Therefore, their camp was to remain holy.
There is an important reminder here for us as well.
It is not a question of if we will face battles. When we face the enemy, temptations and distractions will often come along with the battle. Things will try to pull our attention away from God, compromise our obedience, and distract us from what He has called us to do.
Yet in the middle of the battle, we need to remember that God’s holy presence is with us.
Don’t Allow the Battle to Pull You Away From God
Sometimes the pressure of the battle itself can become an excuse for compromise.
But Scripture gives us the opposite picture.
When Israel went into battle, God didn't tell them holiness mattered less because they were at war. He reminded them that holiness mattered because He was among them.
The same principle carries into the New Testament.
Paul writes:
“Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”— 2 Corinthians 7:1
Holiness is not about earning God’s love or trying to become worthy of Him. It is about living in reverence and obedience before the God who has chosen to dwell among His people.
Remember Who Is Fighting With You
Whatever battle we may be facing, we should never forget who is with us.
The temptation may be strong. The enemy may seem intimidating. The circumstances may be difficult.
But God told Israel:
“The LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you.”
That should change how we approach the battle.
We want to remain close to Him, walk in obedience, and refuse the things that would draw us away from His presence.
Because the last thing we want is to find ourselves trying to fight a spiritual battle in our own strength.
As we go into the battles before us, may we remember the command of Ki Tetzei: keep yourself from evil, pursue holiness, and never forget that the Lord is in your midst to deliver you.
