TORAH: Leviticus 12:1-15:33 | PROPHETS: Isaiah 66:1-24 | GOSPEL: Mark 9:40-50
Our family recently discovered mold in our home.
After watching endless videos about how dangerous it can be to our bodies—which we were already beginning to feel—we realized we had to take it seriously.
This week’s Torah portions, Tazria and Metsora, are all about purification and infections of the body—things like leprosy, and believe it or not, even mold in the home.
Suddenly, these passages felt very real to us.
We moved out of our bedroom, ripped out parts of the wall, sprayed everything down, dried it out, and began doing whatever was necessary to resolve the issue.
I believe God put these passages in Scripture not only to help society take practical steps regarding contagious illness and household issues, but also to give us a deeper understanding of what happens when something unhealthy is allowed into God’s house—the Body of Christ.
Biblically, if mold continued to fester, the house would be taken down brick by brick and removed.
Isn’t that what happened to the Temple?Sin was allowed to persist, to spread, to fester—and eventually, the house was torn down.
Another clear example is found in the story of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
Moses’ brother Aaron and sister Miriam became jealous of him and said:
“Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us as well?”(Numbers 12:2)
Aaron carried the calling as High Priest. Miriam was honored in Israel as a worship leader.
Yet instead of honoring Moses and his unique calling, they spoke against him.
The Bible tells us that the Lord responded immediately. He made it clear there was something special about His servant Moses.
The result?
Miriam became leprous—a deadly and contagious disease.
She was shut out of the camp for seven days, and the entire house of Israel was held back from moving forward until she was restored.
Isn’t this also the story of the Church?
Like Aaron, we are called a "Royal Priesthood":
“You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood…” (1 Peter 2:9)
Like Miriam, we are called to worship through surrender:
“Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God…” (Romans 12:1)
And yet, as the Church—the house of God—this calling has not always been enough to keep us from speaking against Israel.
Israel may not be perfect—just like Moses wasn’t—but God still carries them deeply in His heart.
Listen to God’s heart for Israel:
“Remember these things, O Jacob, And Israel, for you are My servant; I have formed you, you are My servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by Me!”(Isaiah 44:21)
“You are My servant, O Israel, In whom I will be glorified.”(Isaiah 49:3)
Like Aaron and Miriam, speaking against what God has chosen can provoke Him—and it can result in a spiritually sick body.
Something that spreads. Something that defiles. Something that holds the whole community back from moving forward.
And if left unchecked, something that risks being torn down.
Let us move forward in health. Let us choose purification over compromise, humility over pride, and blessing over accusation.
And let us honor what God calls precious—His people, Israel.
